Awarded the Best Wine in the Catad’Or World Wine Awards 2022
The Sibaris Black Series Syrah-Carignan-Grenache 2020 from Cauquenes, Maule Valley, was awarded “Best in Show,” or in other words, the Best Wine of the Competition, and obtained the Great Gold Medal -the maximum distinction- in the 2022 Catad’Or World Wine Awards. This competition is considered the most important international wine competition in Latin America, and the only one with the patronage of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and membership in Vinofed.
This year, Catad’Or World Wine Awards brought together 70 judges from 15 countries. The team of experts was overseen by Alistair Cooper MW, Master of Wine from United Kingdom, and included the distinguished participation of Fernando Gurucharri, president of Vinofed and the Unión Española de Catadores; Aina Mee Myhre MW, Master of Wine from Norway, and Toshio Ueno, Master Sake from Japan.
A total of 329 medals were awarded: 27 Great Gold Medals, 275 Gold Medals, 27 Silver Medals, 13 special trophies per category, in which the Sibaris Black Series Syrah-Carignan-Grenache 2020 was crowned Best in Show, as well as trophies from Vinofed (World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits Competitions, which currently groups 18 major competitions). The competition, which is currently in its 27th version, also considered the spirits category in its Catad’Or World Spirits Awards. Overall, participation in 2022 included 1,300 samples from 20 countries.
The special recognition of Sibaris Black Series Syrah-Carignan-Grenache 2020 was obtained in a second definitory round of tasting of the top five red wines with the highest scores in the competition.
“As a winemaking team, we are immensely proud and believe that this is a well-deserved recognition for our Sibaris line, which offers a solid consistency in its different wines and an excellent value for money, reaching a significant number of consumers around the world.
This wine has a Mediterranean flavour that comes entirely from our Cauquenes vineyard, which was planted in 2008 in a search for reds with superior character and quality, both of which have been achieved and distinguished in this award,” says Rafael Urrejola, Head Winemaker at Viña Undurraga.
For Andrés Izquierdo, CEO of Viña Undurraga, “This important award fills us with pride and gives us even more motivation to continue to pursue excellence and a distinctive character in our wines and reaffirms our fantastic team of farmers and winemakers. This award is all thanks to them!”
In addition to the top award received by the Sibaris Black Series Syrah-Carignan-Grenache 2020, the wine Agreste 2021 (60% Cariñena and 40% Garnacha), also from Cauquenes, Maule Valley, obtained the Great Gold Medal, and Founder’s Collection Carmenere 2020 from Colchagua obtained the Gold Medal.
